Cactus by Madelaine Nunn

Abbie’s seventeen years old, she’s intelligent, perceptive and stubbornly strong willed. Pb is also seventeen - a curious storyteller, if something’s happened, she’ll know about it. In a shared moment of private humiliation Abbie and Pb develop an unbreakable bond, and everyone knows that friendships made in bathrooms are ones that last for life.

Cactus is a darkly comedic coming of age drama following Abbie and Pb in their last year of high school, as they shift from girlhood to whatever the hell is meant to come after that.

From formal dress shopping, to hospital procedures, to losing their virginity, to infertility support groups Cactus is an unflinching, honest look at what it's like to grow up as a young woman. Blending forms of naturalism and heightened theatricality, the audience is taken on an intimate emotional journey into the complexities of a young mind thrust into an unfamiliar world. It is a touching story about identity, femininity and purpose, and the ways we find humour in unlikely places.
