Unicorn girl by Madelaine Nunn

A coming of age comedy about how Samantha Reid, an invisible nerd became the most known and feared person at her school: How she became Unicorn Girl.

Sam is 13 and has always steered clear of trouble, a good girl by everyone’s standards. That is until a hunt for corn chips, an incident with a grey car and an encounter with blackmailing year 8 student puts her at the centre of a school yard fight. Sam doesn’t want to fight- besides, she doesn’t know how, she just wants to admit defeat and escape with the least amount of pain as possible. In doing so, however, she accidentally impales her opponent with her lucky unicorn pen. It doesn’t take long for the rumours to start and for everyone to have heard about Unicorn Girl!

Sam goes from spending her lunch times sitting in the worst spot of the school being bitten by ants to sitting at the only picnic table with the cool kids. She goes from writing fan fiction with her two best friends to writing messages in group chats that she never thought she’d be a part of. She goes from invisible to unmissable. Sam can’t believe it, it’s what she’s always wanted, people to know her name and now they do… sort of. But what is the cost of pretending to be something you’re not? How do you know your true friends if you’re not being true to yourself?

Unicorn Girl is a story about deciding who you are and where you do or don’t want to fit in. It’s about discovering your most unique self and embracing the things that make you, you!
